Book Review #645 - The Infinite Sea (The 5th Wave #2) by Rick Yancey

16131526

The riveting follow-up to the New York Times bestselling The 5th Wave, hailed by Justin Cronin as “wildly entertaining.”

How do you rid the Earth of seven billion humans? Rid the humans of their humanity.

Surviving the first four waves was nearly impossible. Now Cassie Sullivan finds herself in a new world, a world in which the fundamental trust that binds us together is gone. As the 5th Wave rolls across the landscape, Cassie, Ben, and Ringer are forced to confront the Others’ ultimate goal: the extermination of the human race.

Cassie and her friends haven’t seen the depths to which the Others will sink, nor have the Others seen the heights to which humanity will rise, in the ultimate battle between life and death, hope and despair, love and hate.

My Rating: 3.5/5

I picked up this book after about a year since I read The 5th Wave.

The Infinite Sea doesn't offer anything in way of refreshers in order to help those who hadn't recently read The 5th Wave like myself.

Due to this, I was a little confused to begin with as to who all the characters were. It wasn't until Cassie was the narrator that I found some stability with the story.

The last quarter of the book (when it is told from Ringer's perspective) was rather slow and boring although developed the plot immensely.

I will probably have to reread both The 5th Wave and this book before I read the third and final book in the trilogy The Last Star to prevent being confused like this time.

Book Review #204 - Whispers in Autumn (The Last Year #1) by Trisha Leigh

Whispers in Autumn (The Last Year, #1)
In 2015, a race of alien Others conquered Earth. They enslaved humanity not by force, but through an aggressive mind control that turned people into contented, unquestioning robots.

Except sixteen-year-old Althea isn’t content at all, and she doesn’t need the mysterious note inside her locket to tell her she’s Something Else. It also warns her to trust no one, so she hides the pieces that make her different, even though it means being alone.

Then she meets Lucas, everything changes.

Althea and Lucas are immune to the alien mind control, and together they search for the reason why. What they uncover is a stunning truth the Others never anticipated, one with the potential to free the brainwashed human race.

It’s not who they are that makes them special, but what.

And what they are is a threat. One the Others are determined to eliminate for good.

I received this book for review from the author. The author's Goodreads page is here.

I read this book in one sitting, which is something I have only done once previously. Once I started this book I was not able to stop.

I didn't know anything about this book prior to reading, not even the synopsis and thought that it was set further into the future that 2015.

I really liked Althea and liked how you are in her world immediately without any introductions. I also liked her relationship with Lucas because they bonded over time and not instantly like in most young adult novels.

I am really interested in where this series is going especially finding out the possibilities of Althea and Lucas's powers.

Book Review #12 - I am Number Four by Pittacus Lore

John Smith is not your average teenager.

He regularly moves from small town to small town. He changes his name and identity. He does not put down roots. He cannot tell anyone who or what he really is. If he stops moving, those who hunt him will find and kill him.

But you can't run forever.

So when he stops in Paradise, Ohio, John decides to try and settle down. To fit in. And for the first time he makes some real friends. People he cares about - and who care about him. Never in John's short life has there been space for friendship, or even love.

But it's just a matter of time before John's secret is revealed.

He was once one of nine. Three of them have been killed.

John is Number Four. He knows that he is next.....

My Rating: 3.5/5

I finally decided to read this book because the movie comes out in just under two weeks (in Australia). It is the first book that I have read where there have been aliens.

The plot was the only attribute that had me turning the page.

All the characters were average and stereotyped. The main character John Smith was average from everything from his name to his personality.

The ending seemed a little rushed, and considering this book was almost 400 pages long I think it could have been paced out a bit more evenly.

The next book in the series, The Power of Six follows the life of Number 7. This is the first book in a proposed 6 book series.
