Follow Friday #28

Follow Friday is a weekly event hosted by Parajunkee & Alison of Alison Can Read.

This weeks question is:
I like unique names for characters and am looking forward to coming up with some when I start writing. What's the most unique character name you've come across?

Answer: All the names in dystopian books are usually unique. Also Renesmee from Breaking Dawn is a unique name. J.K Rowling is the queen of inventing unique names.

Tag - You're It

I got tagged to do this post by Basically Books.

Rules
  • You must post the rules.
  • Answer the questions the tagger set for you in their post and then create eleven new questions to ask the people you’ve tagged.
  • Tag eleven people and link to them on your post.
  • Let them know you’ve tagged them!

Her Questions were:

1. What is your all time favourite book or two?
The Harry Potter Series

2. If you had to choose between kindle/ereader or paper books which would you choose?
I prefer to have a book in my hands

3.If you could only visit one country in the next 10 years, what country would it be and why?
I have wanted to go to New York since I was six, but I'll say England because I want to see the Ashes over there.

4.At the end of the book do you prefer a cliffhanger or a normal finished ending?
It depends if I have the next book in the series. I used to hate finishing a Harry Potter book because you had to wait forever for the next one.

5.What is the scariest thing you have ever done in your life so far?
I haven't done anything scary so far, although it normally takes alot to scare me.

6.In a book, do you prefer male POV, female POV or child's POV?
I don't really care, just as long as I enjoy it - but if I had to choose, probably female.

7.Have you got a Goodreads account?
Yes, link is here.

8.Would you rather have a date on the beach or in a restaurant?
Beach

9. What is your favourite animal and colour?
I have a few fav animals which are the Great White Shark, Kangaroos and Labradors and I am obsessed with the colour Purple.

10. Are you in any Book Clubs either online or real life? If so which ones?
No, I hate being told what to read.

11. Do you have a library care and visit the Library quite often?
Yes, but I am trying to stop going there because my TBR shelves are full.

My questions are:

1. What was the last movie you watched either on DVD or in the Cinema?
2. Do you watch any sports and if so, what teams do you support?
3. What was the last concert you attended?
4. If you could teleport anywhere in the world right now, where would you go?
5. Do you prefer books in a series or stand alone books?
6. Do you have any other blogs, or have you been thinking about starting another blog?
7. Aside from books, do you collect anything?
8. Do you prefer ebook, audio book or book in hand?
9. Is your bookshelf in any particular order?
10. Name 5 things you can see from where you are sitting?
11. What is your favourite gaming console and your favourite game?

Book Review #106 - Dash and Lily's Book of Dares by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan

Dash & Lily's Book of Dares

“I’ve left some clues for you.
If you want them... turn the page.
If you don’t, put the book back on the shelf, please.”

Lily has left a red notebook full of challenges on a shelf in her favourite bookshop, waiting for just the right guy to come along and accept them. But is Dash that right guy? Could their in-person selves possibly connect as well as their notebook versions? Or will they be a comic mismatch of disastrous proportions?

My Rating: 5/5

This is the first book I have read by both of these authors. I liked both of their writing and thought they collabrated together perfectly. I will definitely be reading their other collaborations and their other books.

What drew me in first with this book was the premise. It sounded like it would make a very intriguing story, which it was.

The two main characters were both likeable with big personalities, although Lily did annoy me at times.

The setting was one of my favourite parts of the book. You could feel the magical feeling of Christmas in New York, which is the main reason why I think this book would make a really good movie

Follow Friday #27

Follow Friday is a weekly event hosted by Parajunkee & Alison of Alison Can Read.

This weeks question is:

What would you prefer: reading your favourite book over and over again until you got sick of it or reading 100s of mediocre books. And why?

Answer: I would have to say I would rather reread my favourite book over and over. That would be simply because if I was to read mediocre books I would probably be forcing myself to read them and then I would get turned off reading.

Book Review #105 - Angel in the Rubble: The Miraculous Rescue of 9/11's Last Survivor by Genelle Guzman-McMillan

Angel in the Rubble: The Miraculous Rescue of 9/11's Last Survivor

The Miraculous Gift of a Second Chance

Am I dead?
But I was in too much pain to be dead, right? I put my left hand right up to my face, but I couldn’t see even a hint of it. As I lay on my right side, my right arm and leg were pinned underneath me. A huge slab of concrete pressed against my head. Mustering all my strength, I pushed against it. Nothing. With my left hand, I could feel that an immense steel beam encased the rest of my body. I was sealed in a coffin of concrete and steel. I screamed for help, but my voice went nowhere. I was alone. Completely alone.

 For twenty-seven hours, Genelle remained below the surface of Tower One’s rubble. During this time, she couldn’t help but reflect on the life she’d lived and how she’d drifted from the faith she once knew. One of her most painful regrets was that she’d left her daughter behind in Trinidad while she pursued her dream of singing and dancing in America. As death now seemed certain, she feared where it would take her. And then she remembered witnessing the miraculous recovery of her aunt when she was a child in Trinidad. Maybe . . . just maybe, God had a miracle for her as well.

For hours she prayed, remembering each detail of her walk away from the faith she’d known as a child. She begged God to forgive her—accepting that she may soon die, but praying for the miracle of life and a chance to live that life with a new purpose and direction.

God answered her prayer by sending an angel to sustain her. Now living in the light, Genelle is making good on the promises she made in the dark while buried in the rubble.

My Rating: 3/5

I don't usually read autobiographies that aren't sport related, but decided to read this because I have always been fascinated by 9/11.

The first half of the book is significantly better than the second half.

I found the first half to be very intriguing with her and her workmates trying to escape the building, and then her becoming trapped. You could feel all the emotions she was experiencing and could picture her situation quite vividly.

The second half of the book consists of her discussing how she found God through everything she's been through. This part kind of ruined the book for me. I felt like this dragged on way too long.

That being said, I really did enjoy this book and it has given me the confidence of reading other autobiographies non-sport related.

Massive Book Haul

I just got back yesterday from Sydney and Melbourne. I spent two days in each city, and I bought alot of books. I went to Sydney to see the Harry Potter Exhibit.

In Sydney books were really expensive so I didn't get very many:

  1. Deltora Quest: The Land of Dragons by Emily Rodda - I got this book free from Dymocks;
  2. The Lonely Hearts Club by Elizabeth Eulberg;
  3. Solo by Rana Dasgupta - I also got this book free from Dymocks;
  4. Switched (Trylle Trilogy #1) by Amanda Hocking;
  5. Summer (Beautiful Dead #3) by Eden Maguire;Fallen in Love (Fallen #3.5) by Lauren Kate;
  6. Dark Peril (Carpathians #21) by Christine Feehan

In Melbourne, the books were very cheap. I found a bookshop where no book was over $5.

  1.  A Kiss in Time by Alex Flinn;
  2. Cinder (The Lunar Chronicles #1) by Marissa Meyer;
  3. Mercy (Mercy #1) by Rebecca Lim;
  4. Divergent (Divergent #1) by Veronica Roth;
  5. Forever in Blue (The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants #2) by Ann Brashares
  6. Before I Die by Jenny Downham;
  7. Rules of Attraction (Perfect Chemistry #2) by Simone Elkeles;
  8. Perfect Chemistry (Perfect Chemistry #1) by Simone Elkeles;
  9. Where She Went (If I Stay #2) by Gayle Forman;
  10. Prince Caspian: the Return to Narnia (The Chronicles of Narnia #2) by C.S Lewis;
  11. Elixir (Elixir #1) by Hilary Duff;
  12. Brisingr (The Inheritance Cycle #3) by Christopher Paolini

  1. The One Hundred Greatest Cricketers by John Woodcock (not on Goodreads);
On the right I finally got the Harry Potter Film Wizardry Book and on the left is the Official Harry Potter Exhibition Guide. The only other book they were selling at the Exhibit was the Harry Potter Page to Screen but it was ridiculously expensive and way too heavy to bring on the airplane home.
 These are my Library reservations that were waiting for me:
